Spelling Activities
to do at Home
There are many helpful ways to help your child practice their spelling words during the week. Here are a few suggestions:
- ABC order - Write your words in alphabetical order
- Rainbow words - Use three different colors to write your words using colored pencils, crayons or markers.
- Cheer your words - Use one of the cheers we learn each week to practice our words.
- Computer fun - Use your computer to type your words. You can even type your words in different fonts.
- Sidewalk Chalk - Write your spelling words with sidewalk chalk outside.
- Pipe Cleaners/Wikki Sticks - Bend the pipe cleaners or wiki sticks into the desired letter to form each spelling word.
- Tracing words on different surfaces- Trace your spelling words in sand, water or on sand paper.
- Spell with a friend - Ask a friend or family member to use one of the spelling words in a sentence but instead of saying the word when they get to it, they spell it and you have to guess what word it is. You will have to listen carefully with this game!
- Singing spelling words - Make songs out of your spelling words.
- Alphabet Macaroni - Buy alphabet macaroni and use the letters to make your spelling words.
- Air words - Write your spelling words in the air with your finger.
- Partner spelling - Ask a friend of family member to partner spell a word with you. One person starts with the first letter and the other person says the second letter and so forth until the whole word is spelled out.
- Best Handwriting - Practice writing your spelling words in your BEST handwriting two times through.
